Paolo Colantonio was born in Rome, Italy, on March 22, 1969. He received his M.Sc Degree in in Electronic Engineering in 1994. From March 1995 to June 1996 he served as Officer in the Military Arms. From November 1996 to October 1999 he was a doctoral student, and in June 2000 he received the PhD degree in Telecommunications and Microelectronics, from the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
During the PhD he studies and develops design guidelines for nonlinear circuits, defining the basic theory of the harmonic manipulation approach for the design of high efficiency and high frequency power amplifiers.
In November 1999 he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, where he was first Researcher until December 2002, then Associate Professor until February 2018, and since then he has been Full Professor.
Since August 2004 he has been Vice President of the ARES – University Consortium (Applied Research and Engineering for Space).
And since March 2006 he has been delegate for the University of Rome Tor Vergata in the Management Committee of the Microwave Engineering Center for Space Applications (MECSA), an inter-university center that brings together research activities in the field of electronics and electromagnetism of 14 Italian universities.
His research activities are mainly focused in the field of microwave and millimetre-wave electronics and in particular on the development of power amplifiers, microwave devices, circuits and systems up to and beyond the sub-THz range.
Highlights on his research activities were the development of the first high frequency harmonic manipulated amplifiers (e.g. 2nd harmonic, class F, class E, etc.) and the development of a new theory and related guidelines for the design of power amplifiers in Doherty configuration based on solid state devices, including techniques to improve their performance in communications systems, both in terms of linearity, bandwidth or signal dynamics .
Prof. Colantonio has a strong experience in developing high efficiency and high power amplifiers, for both ground ans space applications.
He has published over 300 scientific papers on the above research topics, a book (High Efficiency RF and Microwave Solid State Power Amplifiers, Wiley, 2009), two book chapters, four contributions on Encyclopedia of RF and Microwave Engineering (Wiley), and 2 patents.
He was the co-recipient of several Best Paper Awards, invited speaker at several international conferences, and Guest Editor in various journals.
Prof. Colantonio is IEEE Senior Member, and currently Associate Editor of IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters.
He is a member of several Technical Program Committees and Steering Committees of International Conferences, and served as TPC chair of EuMIC 2014, INMMIC 2015.
Prof. Colantonio is the Chair of the incoming European Microwave Integrated Circuits Conference 2022.
